Millage must be raised to maintain and enhance Library services

Community Advocates for Libraries in Miami (CALM), is announcing its formation as a political
action committee within Miami-Dade County.

CALM has been established to:

  • Support actions and political candidates that will bring about the full funding for the Miami-Dade Public Library System (MDPLS) in order to maintain and enhance library services for Miami-Dade County. This includes, but is not limited to, the increase of the Library’s millage (tax) rate to collect revenue of $64 million for FY2014-2015, based on the Coalition to Save Our Libraries’ collective recommendation.
  • Bring awareness to Miami-Dade taxpayers and residents of the consequence of the $21 million funding gap that the Library district faces for FY 2014-2015, should the millage rate not be raised.

It is the belief of CALM that the budget scenarios requested by Mayor Gimenez are still woefully
insufficient, as they called for drastically reduced hours, staff, and services. Based on the two
plans provided, Mayor Gimenez did not follow through with the Task Force recommendations of
“increasing the millage to maintain and enhance library services.” Efficiencies do not necessarily
equate to cuts, nor is it cost-effective to underutilize locations and lay-off trained professionals.
CALM endorses a tax millage to increase the Library budget of $64 million to prevent any partial
closures of branches, and to “maintain and improve library services”, as the members of the
Blue Ribbon Task Force had originally recommended.

Usage of funds donated to CALM will be made publicly available via our website, and used
solely for spreading the word to taxpayers and residents of the plight that MDPLS faces for
FY2014-2015, should the millage be insufficient.

Initial resources will be used to promote attendance of taxpayers and residents to the April 23
Finance Committee Meeting at County Hall to advocate for a fully-funded MDPLS.
